Working in a Shantytown.
A Shantytowm in like a slum in Buenos Aires. We taught English for a day at a local Shantytown library. I met a little boy, Willy. He was 3 and he liked his superheroes! I played a card game that had Powerangers on them and he flipped over all the cards so you couldn’t see them and we would pick 2 up at a time. He was set on the cards he wanted though. So, I would flip over 2 and he would say, ” No, No…” shaking his head. We eventually played his game but I just put down cards and he would “beat” me.
Another cute thing is that it was about -1C out side and a little girl named Nelida had cold hands and liked my fuzzy gloves. I let her wear them while I was teaching her and playing with her. At the end, she was giving them back when I said ” No, No…” And gave them back to her. She just got a new pair of gloves that I had bought a few days before. I hope she liked them. People say Shantytowns are dangerous and just a terrible place to be. I really don’t think so! At first I thought what everybody else thought. But when we volunteered, I quickly changed my mind! The kids are adorable and there are thousands of dogs and it is really cool. Parents usually leave the house to work and don’t come back until 8:00 or 9:00 pm. So the kids are at home but with Voluntario Global. They paid a mother to cook for the volunteers and she stays at home! It was great and I recommend it to everybody!
